2.1000 XXL BENRUS AW3 CONVERSION WATCH 45mm, SWISS 1930s

£690.00

This is a newly made conversion watch based on the high-grade original vintage movement made by Benrus in the 1940s.

Making conversion watches is a great way to revive previously abandoned pocket watch movements and allow them to be worn on the wrist for more modern use.

We have constructed a new case bespoke to the Benrus movement specifications giving the piece a new fresh look. We have also included a rear mineral crystal window in the caseback to show off the beautiful Unitas movement.

This Model AW was in production from 1920 to 1945. AW3 is the most precise version of the movement.

About Benrus

Benrus Watch Company was founded in 1921 in New York City by Romanian immigrant brothers Oscar, Benjamin, and Ralph Lazrus. Named after Benjamin, the company produced affordable wristwatches during a time when pocketwatches were falling out of favor. With headquarters in Manhattan and Swiss-made movements from its factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Benrus quickly grew—especially during WWII—supplying military timing devices and stylish civilian watches. Post-war, the brand thrived with unique designs like the “Dial-o-Rama” and “Citation.”

By the 1950s, Benrus was the third-largest U.S. watchmaker and became entangled in a failed takeover of rival Hamilton, leading to a landmark antitrust case. The company expanded internationally but struggled during the quartz revolution. Sold in 1967, Benrus declined and filed for bankruptcy in 1977. Though modern watches still use the Benrus name, true vintage models are prized for their craftsmanship and history.
