Key Features
Large size conversion watch based on an original pocket watch movement by Hy Moser & Cie. This movement was originally a pocket watch, but back in 1920s has been re-housed into a nickel plated wristwatch case.
According to the movement quality and details (gold hands, top grade sunk counters enamel dial, instant counter complication), the movement used to be in a gold pocket watch type case, but the case was scrapped many years ago and replaced with a more desirable wrist type case. It has a top crown for winding and chrono pusher function, and a bottom mock crown.
Dual-crown type
Dual crown type cases are an important step from a pocket watch to a wristwatch type case design. Bottom ‘mock’ neck and winding crown was mounted to wear the watch on the wrist, that kind of watch was used exclusively by horseman troopers, motorbike or car drivers, etc. See examples – Example 1, Example 2.
In 1920’s there was a significant rise in demand for wrist type watches, especially complicated ones for professional use. This Hy Moser chrono is an example how pocket watch was converted into that type of case back in the 1920’s.
Chronograph function
The chronograph is operated via the top crown by pressing it. First push – start chronograph, second – stop chronograph, third – reset counters.
The movement also features an interesting instant minute counter function, instant counter chrono movements are usually more complicated and fetch a higher price.
About Hy Moser & Cie
Hy Moser & Cie was founded in 1826 by Johann Heinrich Moser. Moser’s factory produced a wide range of pocket watches for both men and women in a large variety of different types and styles, which became so popular that the company began to have a consistent problem with counterfeits. In 1868, Moser, together with the American Florentino-Ariosto Jones, created a new watch company called the ‘International Watch Company’, which became a pioneer of the industrial production of watches in Switzerland.
The Hy Moser & Cie factory was revived in Schaffhausen, Switzerland in 2005, and is now among the top ten independent watch manufactories. It produces interesting luxury watches with special functions. Remarkably, the designs from the original samples of vintage Moser movements are echoed in the basic style and shape of the movements produced today.
