A very attractive Record Watch Co cushion-case dress watch in solid 9K gold, preserved in unusually fine condition. Formally speaking the watch is not large, but the non-round cushion shape gives it much more presence on the wrist than the dimensions alone suggest. The wide, open lug stance also allows straps from 18 to 20 mm, which helps the watch wear larger and more confidently than one might expect. It is an excellent vintage option under a suit cuff.
That is part of the charm here: many gold watches from the 1950s were either melted for scrap or survived in tired condition. This one is exactly the opposite – a beautifully preserved example with crisp dial and a movement that looks exceptionally fresh.
The dial is clean and elegant, with a warm cream tone, applied gold numerals, the distinctive swan logo, and a recessed small-seconds register at 6 o’clock. Gold “leaf” hands complete the look perfectly. The low-domed acrylic crystal and softly rounded cushion case give the watch that ideal early-1950s balance between classic dress refinement and slightly modernist case design.
Record Watch Co was a very solid and respected Swiss manufacturer, known for producing its own movements rather than relying purely on outsourced ébauches. That independence is one reason collectors still value the brand today. Record also built a strong reputation for dependable military and civilian timepieces, and its watches were appreciated during the WWII era on both the British and German sides for their practicality and reliability. The swan logo became one of the brand’s recognisable signatures. Record was later absorbed into the Longines sphere, which only adds to its historical interest.
