About JW Benson
James William Benson (b.1826) was a silversmith and scientific instrument manufacturer who took up watchmaking, and founded the company S.S. and J.W. Benson with his brother Samuel Suckley Benson in 1847. The company manufactured and sold watches, and continued to do so even after the dissolution of Samuel and James’ partnership, James’ death and the subsequent acquisition of the company by his three sons. JW Benson was an official watchmaker to the admiralty, producing watches for Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia, Abu Bakar of Johor and several other royal families.
After the factory was bombed during WW2, destroying thousands of timepieces, JW Benson continued as a watch retailer but no longer manufactured their own timepieces. High quality Swiss movements were used in JW Benson watches, such as those from Vertex and Longines. Business continued all the way up to 1972, at which point the company name was bought by jewellery giant Garrards.
