2.0272 EXCALIBUR (Tissot) rare quartz, steel, 1970s

£145.00

An artefact from a tumultuous time in Swiss watchmaking history, the Excalibur appears to be the first inhouse quartz invention from Tissot. Featuring a heavy steel case and bracelet, the tropicalised accents on the dial reveal a watch that has aged gracefully. Its unusual time setting system has a satisfying haptic feedback with each turn of the crown

Key Features

The 37mm hexagonal, Gerald Genta-esque solid steel case features a pearlescent white dial with gentle aging around the calendar complication. The dial also has a Geneva striped texture that catches the light in a beautiful banding pattern. Its tapered steel bracelet is integrated into the case.

The Excalibur’s main eccentricity is the unconventional time setting system. Pulling out the crown will only adjust the hours, minutes are adjusted by depressing the crown, once at first to stop the seconds hand, and then held for 5 seconds to trigger the minute hand to start rotating, which can then be released at the desired time.

About Tissot

Tissot SA is a Swiss luxury watch brand, founded in Le Locle, Switzerland by Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son, Charles-Émile Tissot, in 1853. In 1858 Charles-Emile Tissot travelled to Russia, where he succeeded in selling and popularising the company’s Savonette Pocket Watches across the Russian Empire. In 2021, Tissot SA is marketing the Le Locle Powermatic 80, which has a watch face designed to mimic the clock tower in its founding city of Le Locle.

Tissot merged with watch company Omega SA in 1930, forming SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère), and Tissot-Omega watches from this era are much sought after by collectors. Tissot is an official timekeeper for the world championships in cycling, motorcycling, fencing and ice hockey, and was also a sponsor for the Formula One car-racing teams Lotus, Renault, and Sauber.

Tissot watches have been worn by the likes of Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, Grace Kelly, Elvis Presley and Nelson Mandela.
