A rare original German military wristwatch made by Wagner of Pforzheim and supplied for use under the RLM – Reichsluftfahrtministerium, the German Air Ministry responsible for the Luftwaffe. The inside of the caseback carries the original RLM marking.

This is not one of the huge B-Uhr navigation watches normally associated with the Luftwaffe, but a compact military service watch intended for everyday use. Watches of this general type were supplied by several German manufacturers and were used by Luftwaffe personnel in a variety of roles. Wagner was one of the smaller Pforzheim manufacturers involved in this production.

The watch has a particularly attractive two-tone military dial. A black outer section carries luminous Arabic numerals and a clear railway minute track, while the contrasting copper-coloured centre gives the watch a very unusual appearance. The small seconds register at 6 o’clock repeats the black outer design and completes the balanced layout.

Wagner was the watch company of Ernst Wagner in Pforzheim, founded in 1933. The firm produced watches and cases and was part of the German watchmaking network connected with movement suppliers such as UROFA. Surviving Wagner military watches are considerably less common than pieces from the better-known wartime suppliers.

Description

Movement and technical notes

The watch is fitted with the UROFA calibre 551, a German 10½-ligne hand-wound movement manufactured by Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrik Glashütte AG. The calibre was developed from the earlier UROFA 55 and is documented as having been produced between 1935 and 1941.

This detail is particularly interesting because it makes the watch substantially German in origin: the Wagner company was based in Pforzheim, while the movement came from UROFA in Glashütte. German military watches of the period often used domestic UROFA, Durowe and PUW movements.
