2.1262 XL WOSTOK “DRIVER / PILOT” PLASTIC ASYMMETRICAL, USSR 1970s

£750.00

An exceptionally unusual Soviet Wostok from the 1970s, built in a large asymmetrical plastic case with a deliberately tilted dial. This is one of the most distinctive experimental Wostok designs of the period: not a standard catalogue model, not a conventional dress watch, and not something that appears often in ordinary retail circulation.

The idea behind the case is wonderfully practical. The dial is angled toward the wearer when the hand is resting on a steering wheel, motorcycle handlebar, or control surface. For this reason the model is often nicknamed “Driver”, and sometimes also described as “Pilot” or “Motorcyclist”. The concept is simple but brilliant: the watch can be read more naturally without turning the wrist in the usual way.

This example is especially appealing because of its large format. Soviet watches with a 22 mm strap width are very uncommon outside large diver-style watches, and here the broad two-part NATO strap works perfectly with the oversized plastic case. The whole object feels more like a piece of 1970s functional design than a conventional wristwatch: light, bold, experimental, and unmistakably different.
