About Birch & Gaydon
Birch & Gaydon, a renowned retail jeweller, silversmith, and watchmaker, was established around 1760 by watchmaker William Turner at 18 Cornhill, London. The business relocated several times before being acquired by William Birch in 1840. Under Birch’s leadership, the company transitioned from watch repair to manufacturing, producing handcrafted timepieces through the traditional English “putting out” method. Despite initial success, competition from Swiss and American manufacturers led the company to focus on retailing watches, jewellery, and fine goods by the early 20th century.
In 1877, Henry Martin Gaydon joined as a partner, forming Birch & Gaydon. William Birch retired in 1883, leaving Gaydon as the sole proprietor. The company moved to 153 Fenchurch Street in 1904 and continued operations until 1959 when it was acquired by Asprey & Co. Ltd. Asprey maintained the Birch & Gaydon name for some time, catering to City of London clientele. Although no longer independent, Birch & Gaydon remains a part of London’s rich horological history.
