Key Features
In 1959, Japanese company Citizen produced Japan’s first ever water-resistant wrist watch, dubbed the “Parawater”. Parawater was rated to a depth of 50 metres, although 50 meters might not seem very impressive in today’s watch world. It is important to note that during the unveiling of the Parawater, 50m was better than anything else that Japan had put out during that era. Citizen was so proud of this achievement that early Parawaters had their citizen logo replaced with “Parawater”.
This particular watch features an alarm mechanism that produced a distinctive buzzing sound, amplified by the wide flanges on the caseback to allow more reverberation. The alarm can be set and wound using the topmost winding crown, which moves the small arrow-shaped alarm hand. The case is a solid steel and has a mirror finish to it, and is in great condition. Dial has a gorgeous silver sunburst effect, and segments of the applied indices are layered with a very brightly glowing lume, untouched since original production!
About Citizen
Citizen is, strictly speaking, an electronics company, but they are best known as a watch manufacturer. The company was founded in 1930 by Japanese and Swiss investors. Among some of Citizen’s personal achievements in watchmaking are; the development of radio-controlled atomic watches that could be synchronised to an atomic clock that was accurate to within one second in one hundred thousand years, a three pronged quartz movement that claimed to be accurate within +/- 10 seconds a year and had a sweeping seconds hand, and the Eco-Drive watches that ran on solar power with a supplementary quartz movement.
