An American technological marvel from the 1970s: a Bulova Accutron powered by an electronic tuning-fork oscillator rather than a conventional balance wheel. These watches do not tick in the usual mechanical way – instead, the tuning fork produces a smooth, quiet 360 Hz hum, a wonderfully period-correct sound that becomes especially charming when the watch is held close to the ear.
This example is unusually well preserved for its age. The champagne-gold dial is clean and attractive, the original acrylic crystal has the right vintage warmth, and the movement works beautifully. Accutron watches are specialist pieces, and this one is exactly the kind we like: historically important, technically unusual, and still perfectly wearable.
Bulova introduced the Accutron line as a revolutionary alternative to traditional mechanical watches: instead of a balance wheel, the movement uses a tiny electrically driven tuning fork regulated by a transistor electronic circuit. This gave Accutron watches their famous high-frequency hum and excellent precision for the pre-quartz era.
