An early generation Omega Seamaster ref. 166.003 from the mid-1960s – one of the most wearable and collectible “proper” vintage Seamasters. Clean lines, sharp lugs, a domed acrylic crystal, and the iconic Seahorse caseback – this is the core Seamaster design language before the line became more diverse and tool-oriented.
And it’s also the perfect answer to modern reissues. Compare this watch with the recently re-issued Omega “Seamaster 1948”: the same restrained mid-century proportions, the same case silhouette, the same calm, confident dial layout. The difference is simple – you’re looking at the genuine original from the era that inspired those modern releases.
Why early Seamasters are collectible
Early Seamasters combine something very rare: true everyday practicality (automatic, date, robust case construction) with refined mid-century elegance. In collector terms, these watches are often more interesting than a comparable Rolex Oyster of the same period because Omega produced a huge variety of dial/case executions with very high manufacturing quality – so you can still find “new discoveries” in small details: dial tones, lume shapes, crystal signatures, and subtle case geometry. When you want an authentic 1960s Swiss daily watch with real heritage, the early Seamaster is one of the strongest choices.
