A large and striking Omega Genève Chronometer from 1972, powered by the legendary f300 Hz tuning-fork movement. With its bold, square-inspired case design, substantial dimensions, and ultra-smooth seconds hand, this watch delivers a commanding wrist presence and represents one of the most fascinating transitional chapters in Swiss watchmaking history.
The watch is presented in very good vintage condition. The stainless steel case polishing/brushing has been updated in our workshop. The dial is clean and well preserved, with crisp printing and attractive vertical brushing. Hands and indices are original and well matched. The movement has been professionally serviced, is running correctly, and comes with a 12-month mechanical warranty.
The f300 Hz tuning-fork movement represents a pivotal moment between traditional mechanical watches and quartz technology. Originally developed and patented by Bulova, the tuning-fork principle was later refined and produced in Switzerland by Ebauches SA (ESA). Omega adopted this advanced technology for its high-end electronic chronometers, including this Genève model.
Instead of a conventional balance wheel, the movement uses a vibrating tuning fork oscillating at 300 Hz, regulated electronically. This results in exceptional accuracy for its era and the distinctive smooth, gliding seconds hand accompanied by a gentle humming sound. These movements were extremely costly to manufacture, complex to service, and were produced only for a short period before being rendered obsolete by the more economical quartz movements that followed.
The generous case dimensions and square-ish profile give this watch a strong, modern wrist presence, further enhanced by the wide 20 mm strap. Despite its size, the case sits comfortably thanks to well-balanced proportions and moderate thickness. This is an ideal piece for collectors drawn to technical innovation, 1970s design, and rare movement architecture.
