A very attractive mid-1960s Oris Super wristwatch, preserved with its original Oris Super presentation box and original UK warranty paper. Most importantly, the guarantee is dated 20 August 1966, giving this watch an unusually well-documented history and an exact date of sale.
The watch has a classic silver sunburst dial with applied gold-tone hour markers, Arabic numerals at 12 and 6, centre seconds and matching gold-tone hands. Small luminous dots mark the hours around the outer track. The elegant 32.8 mm case is 10-micron gold plated, combined with a signed stainless steel back.
The original guarantee was issued through the British Oris distribution network and is stamped by the original retailer, a watchmaker at 28a Bogie Street, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Together with the original Oris Super box, this makes the watch a particularly complete surviving example of a mid-1960s Oris sold in the UK.
About Oris “Super”
The Oris Super line represents an important and very recognisable part of mid-century Oris production. These watches were practical, honest Swiss wristwatches with distinctive in-house Oris movements and strong dial design. They were never trying to be high-luxury chronometers; instead, they offered durable, accessible Swiss watchmaking with plenty of personality – exactly why these pieces remain interesting today.
Original Box and Papers
A major feature of this watch is its surviving documentation. The original warranty is clearly dated 20/8/66, so unlike many vintage watches of this period, its date does not need to be estimated from the movement or styling.
The paperwork also records the original retailer in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, giving the watch a documented connection to the British market. The original green ORIS SUPER box completes the set.
The watch is powered by the Oris calibre 482KIF, a 17-jewel manual-winding movement from an important period in Oris history. The movement uses a jewelled lever escapement and KIF shock protection, represented by the KIF suffix in the calibre designation.
