About Phenix
The Phenix factory originated in 1873 when Jules Dubail, Jean-Baptiste Monnin, and Joseph Frossard established “Dubail, Monnin, Frossard & Cie” in Porrentruy. Initially focused on gas extinguishers, the company later shifted toward watch manufacturing. In 1899, it was renamed the “Société d’horlogerie de Porrentruy” and expanded to Bassecourt. Financial difficulties led to its liquidation in 1902, after which it was reestablished as “Phénix Watch Co SA” under new ownership, continuing the production of lever and cylinder watches for various international markets.
Phenix was among the early Swiss watch manufacturers to register a patented caliber and participated in international exhibitions. The company developed precision tools, including the “Dubail lathe,” and specialized in the production of lever watches, wristwatches, and pocket watches. By the early 20th century, it had established distribution agreements in multiple countries, including Romania, France, Belgium, Austria, England, and Mexico. In addition to traditional timepieces, the company also produced watches for automobiles and counters for rockets.
