Key Features
Considering the condition of this piece, you’d probably be surprised to learn it was over 80 years old. The chrome case hasn’t gone through any major restoration, and yet the surface has minimal flaw and reflects beautifully. The Arabic numerals with alternating indices make for a very legible dial, whose cream-like patina has a gentle speckling of wear, giving the effect of vanilla seeds. Eclipsing the top of the ‘6’ numeral is a delicate seconds subdial, with a radial engraving. The requisite ‘Lemania’ signature is a subtly balancing flourish on this watch, elegant symmetry in the typography makes the intrinsically asymmetrical Arabic numerals appear uniform.
About Lemania
Lemania was founded in 1884, by Alfred Lugrin, a highly skilled award-winning watchmaker. The manufacturer enjoyed a decades-long lifespan, but despite merging with Omega and Tissot in 1932 to form the SSIH group, it took heavy blows with the advent of electronic watches, as did the mechanical watch industry at large. Lemania rebranded as Nouvelle Lemania in 1981, and in 1992 it was bought by Breuget. Lemania movements are still used today in a number of well-known watch brands.
