2.1311 F.HILSER TROWBRIDGE / BUREN, SILVER 925, SWISS 1927-28

£420.00

A particularly charming and unusual find for a collector of British retail-signed watches. This piece brings together a quality Swiss-made Buren movement, a sterling silver case imported into Britain, the well-known London sponsor mark of H. Williamson, and the name of a local Trowbridge jeweller on the dial. Watches like this are exactly the sort of objects that can send a collector down the rabbit hole of British provincial watch houses and start a habit of putting little flags on a map.

Although the watch is formally modest in size, the soft cushion-shaped silver case and 18mm wide strap give it noticeably more presence on the wrist than the measurements alone suggest. It wears light and comfortable, yet visually it has the satisfying character of a much larger watch. The original enamel dial, with its retailer’s signature, elegant stylised Arabic numerals and blued Breguet-style hands, gives the piece a distinctly pre-war British market look.

The sterling silver case was Swiss-made, then imported into Britain and assayed in London. The W.H.S. punch is the sponsor or importer’s mark used by H. Williamson Ltd. for imported watch cases. Williamson was a major London wholesaler and is especially well known to military-watch collectors for watches supplied to British service markets in the early 20th century. The London Gothic “m” date letter corresponds to the hallmarking year spanning roughly late May 1927 to late May 1928.

F. Hilser, Trowbridge appears to have been a local retailer rather than a manufacturer, which is exactly what makes this watch appealing. Provincial jewellers and watch retailers often ordered quality Swiss watches with their own names printed on the dial, creating small-batch signed pieces that are far scarcer today than mainstream branded production. In that sense, this watch is not just a Buren in silver, but also a surviving trace of Trowbridge retail horology.

The movement is a Buren calibre 834 (8 3/4’’’), 15 jewels, a compact in-house Swiss movement from the late 1920s. Buren developed a strong reputation for slim, well-made calibres and later used “Grand Prix” branding across a long-running family of watches, a name collectors associate with the firm’s strong interwar and mid-century standing.

Most silver and gold watches from this era have either been heavily worn, altered, or simply lost to time. Here, by contrast, the watch survives as an exceptionally attractive and honest example, with a crisp enamel dial, correct period styling, and a very appealing combination of Swiss manufacture and British retail history.
