Large and intense Red ‘MAXI’ version of the famous Fortis Flipper (see adverts in gallery). Typical Flipper is 35mm and MAXI Flipper is 38 mm size. Powered by a self-winding ‘super-automatic’ ETA 2782 movement. Super-progressive for the 1970s ; fibreglass plastic case with metal tension ring was initially designed for skiing and winter sports. In cold environments the case technology would shrink metal ring and seal the whole case tighter (we do not recommend experimenting to much with this, please consider the case weatherproof only).
Flipper model was advertised since 1969, it was first introduced in the 1960s by Fortis (or under its sub-brand Eloga, which was closely associated with Fortis in some markets). It was marketed as a fun, affordable, vibrant watch, with interchangeable bezels and colours, making it more playful than typical dive or sport watches of the time. Cases are plastic or fibreglass (resin/plastic styles) type, which was unusual for Swiss watches at the time — this was an early experiment in lightweight materials. It had a monocoque design (“one-piece” case, no removable back), which drastically improves water resistance.
The Maxi-Flipper is fitted with an original vintage TROPIC plastic/rubber strap, rare overall cosmetic condition, barely worn or maybe even unworn. The movement has been serviced in our workshop and runs like new.
