About Gruen
The Gruen Watch Company was once one of the largest and most influential watch manufacturers in the United States. Founded in 1894 by German-born watchmaker Dietrich Gruen in Cincinnati, Ohio, the company quickly gained a reputation for precision and innovation. Gruen’s early success stemmed from his patented safety pinion design, which improved pocket watch durability. Over the years, the company evolved through various partnerships and name changes, expanding its production from Germany to Switzerland and the U.S. By the 1920s, Gruen had become the largest watch company in the U.S., known for high-quality timepieces such as the VeriThin and Curvex models.
During World War II, Gruen shifted its production to support the U.S. military, manufacturing gauges and instruments for aircraft and submarines. However, the post-war years brought challenges as Swiss imports gained dominance in the watch market. Despite efforts to maintain its position, the Gruen family sold their interest in 1953, and the company was ultimately dissolved in 1958. While Gruen watches are no longer produced, their legacy lives on, with vintage models still prized by collectors.
