About The ‘Super-Compressor’

The “Super Compressor” is a trademarked case design manufactured by Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA) from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, renowned for its innovative sealing mechanism that made watches more watertight as they descended deeper underwater. Patented in 1956, the design featured spring-loaded, multi-part case backs that tightened against the middle case and gasket under increasing pressure. Though Super Compressors were produced in various configurations, the most iconic examples used EPSA’s dual-crown design with internal rotating bezels, often marked by cross-hatched crowns at 2 and 4 o’clock. These cases were supplied to numerous brands, including Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, Hamilton, and Enicar, resulting in a wide range of designs despite their shared core structure.

Super Compressors came in two primary sizes (36 mm and 42 mm), with larger models being more sought-after. Prices for surviving examples vary significantly, depending on the brand and condition, ranging from under $1,000 for lesser-known brands to tens of thousands for models like the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris. Some models were even issued to military divers, such as the Polish Navy’s Enicar Sherpa Super Dive and the Royal Australian Navy’s Droz models, which often carry a premium. However, sourcing genuine replacement parts can be challenging, as EPSA no longer exists. Super Compressors remain a fascinating and diverse segment of vintage dive watches, offering options for collectors at every budget level.
