2.0296 TISSOT SIDERAL fiber-glass Automatic, 1971

£380.00

“Young materials for a young watch” is how the Tissot Sideral was advertised in 1971, with its highly durable and weather resistant bakelite-fibreglass case. Now, in 2022, we’ve breathed new life into this timepiece by adding a new gold plating on the bezel and fitting it with a brassy sunburst dial, with cool chunky indices to match! At a full width of 42mm, this is a bold adornment for your wrist that isn’t imposingly large, and yet another piece of horological history. The watch has undergone full servicing with disassembly in our Bristol workshop, and comes with a 12-month warranty and new 18mm black genuine leather strap.

Key Features

This iconic Tissot model, produced in 1971 indicated by the serial number, was built with durability in mind. The case is a bakelite-fibreglass compound, two substances well known for their tensile strength and, most notably with fibreglass, insulating properties. At the time of production, both bakelite and fibreglass had existed since the turn of the 20th century and were widely used across a range of industries, but relative to the ancient history of horology and watchmaking which is a chiefly metal-based craft, these are indeed young materials for a young watch.

The monocoq front-loaded case is unusual but makes for a very water resistant watch, and there is a visually durable quality to this design. The bezel used to have a scratch which we have restored and obscured with a brand new gold plating, and the previously dark coloured plain dial has been replaced with a new brass-tone sunburst dial.
