A large, bright and charismatic French diver from the late 1960s – the Yema Sous-Marine, made by one of the best-known French watch brands. Yema built much of its reputation on practical sports watches, especially divers and tool watches, and the Sous-Marine line is one of the distinctive vintage Yema dive-watch families. Similar period examples are known with FE 140 / FE 140-1C manual-wind movements, date at 3 o’clock, bi-directional rotating bezel, and large late-1960s / early-1970s cases.
What makes this watch especially attractive is that Yema did not simply copy the standard diver-watch formula. The composition is much more individual: a deep black dial, large white Arabic numerals with a very unusual serif style, red minute track, bright orange seconds hand, and a bold black aluminium diving bezel. It is instantly recognisable and far more characterful than many generic divers of the same period.
The chrome-plated case has a typical 1960s diver profile with an asymmetrical crown post. The rotating aluminium bezel is used for measuring elapsed dive time and turns firmly in both directions. The large winding crown is comfortable, practical, and nicely tactile. The watch is fitted with a stainless steel mesh bracelet. Bracelet length adjustment is included free of charge.
About Yema France
Yema is one of the best-known French watch brands, founded in Besançon in 1948 and strongly associated with practical sports watches, especially divers, chronographs and rally-style models. During the 1960s and 1970s, Yema developed a distinctive design language that was often more adventurous than many Swiss equivalents, combining bold cases, unusual dials and strong tool-watch character. Vintage Yema watches are now appreciated for their French identity, while the company is operational and successful nowadays.
