2.1357 8-DAYS “GOLIATH” OVERSIZE 92mm POCKET WATCH, SWISS 1890s

£600.00

A remarkable late-19th-century Swiss Goliath pocket watch, distinguished by its monumental 92 mm case and eight-day mechanical movement. This is not merely a large pocket watch: it is an imposing portable timepiece that sits somewhere between a pocket watch, travel clock, coach watch and desk instrument.

Many traditional Goliath watches measure approximately 64–67 mm across. At 92 mm without the crown, this example belongs to a much rarer oversized category. Including the bow, it reaches an impressive 133 mm in height. The watch has considerable physical presence and is particularly well suited for display, desk use or use as a functional horological paperweight.

The classical white enamel dial, enormous Roman numerals and long blued-steel hands make the time exceptionally easy to read. Despite the extravagant scale, the design remains elegant and well balanced, retaining the visual language of a traditional Victorian pocket watch.

About Goliath/Coach Watches

“Goliath” watches are oversized pocket/coach watches made to be carried in coaches, carriages, or used as prominent travel and desk timekeepers rather than standard waistcoat pocket pieces. Antique dealers typically describe them as larger and thicker than normal pocket watches, with the “Goliath” designation used for these extra-large formats.

Movement & Technical Notes

The watch is powered by a large Swiss mechanical movement with an eight-day power reserve. From one full winding, the mechanism is capable of running for approximately a week without stopping.

As is characteristic of this antique long-duration movement, practical rate stability is strongest during the first one or two days after winding. As the mainspring gradually unwinds and its torque decreases, the watch begins to lose time. It should therefore be regarded as a fascinating functional antique rather than a modern precision timekeeper.

The watch has been regulated and tested in the dial-up position, which is also its most natural working position when used as a desk watch or horological paperweight.
