2.1269 J.W. BENSON LONDON by SMITHS “AQUATITE”, MADE IN ENGLAND, 1950s

£600.00

A pure example of British watchmaking from the era when “MADE IN ENGLAND” meant truly British manufacturing, not assembly in Britain from Swiss components. This piece brings together three pillars of the English horological industry – Smiths, J.W. Benson, and Dennison – in one honest, beautifully engineered dress watch.

At its heart is a Smiths movement made for London’s historic jeweller-retailer J.W. Benson, fitted into a Dennison-made Aquatite case – a classic British answer to everyday practicality. The movement shows the unmistakable traditional English gilt plate/bridge style, full of warm colour and old-world finishing.

J.W. Benson (London)

J.W. Benson was one of Britain’s most respected watch and jewellery houses, supplying timepieces to the public and institutions for generations. Their name on the dial was a mark of trust – a London retailer with a long history, known for commissioning quality watches under its own signature.

Smiths Watches

Smiths is the most important name in British wristwatch manufacturing of the mid-20th century – a true “in-house” English producer when most of the market relied heavily on Switzerland. Collectors love Smiths for their national significance, robust construction, and distinctly British engineering language – especially the gilt-finished calibres like this one.

Dennison cases

Dennison was the giant of British case-making: the firm behind countless high-grade cases for English-market watches. Their workmanship is instantly recognisable, and the Dennison “Aquatite” concept (paired with a steel back) was designed as a practical, dust-resistant solution for daily wear.
