2.1005 STOWA KM WW2 U-BOAT KRIEGSMARINE, SWISS 1940s

£1,450.00

Original WW2 German military navy pocket watch by STOWA (Walter Storz) – Klasse II Chronometer for Kriegsmarine. ‘II Klasse’ pocket chronometers were supplied to submarine Captains and First Mates. Most of the U-Boats fighting during the war were destroyed, so not many of these chronometers have survived over the years since.

This KM watch is famous and quite collectible. You can find it in specialized collectors books and plenty of information is available online about their legacy. It even has a modern ‘twin’ recently reissued by Stowa, that comes with the same vintage Unitas 2813 movement, but a bit smaller case and a different crown.

Key Features

  • Original German military high-precision pocket chronometer from the 1940s.
  • Fully luminous non-Radium dial, printed black numerals and indexes (all original).
  • Rare Stop-second feature – once you pull the crown out to the setting position, the second hand runs to 60 then stops. A perfect feature to synchronize time with the Master Chronometer on the associated U-Boat.
  • Extra large size 60mm (standard for deck watch / chronometer).
  • Fully serviced and ready to wear, 12-month warranty is applied.
  • As per NAWCC forum, only 2000 pieces were ordered by Reich from 1940.
  • See an identical Stowa KM watch review from German’s collection.

About Stowa

Stowa, founded by Walter Storz Pforzheim in 1927, is a German brand well-known as a supplier of military and special purpose watches. The name is a portmanteau of the founder’s name, Storz Walter. Prior to WWII, Stowa produced wrist and pocket watches to the general public from their factories in Hornberg in the Black Forest, and later to Pforzheim in 1938. However, in 1940 the company managed to obtain the patents for the famous Ebauche movements used for the Observation Watches (Beobachtungsuhr or B-Uhr) used and required by the German Military, and during this period the company grew in size and fame.

By the end of the war, Stowa had suffered considerable damage and struggled to regain footing on the market. However, by 1945 they were able to start manufacturing again, producing high quality and affordable everyday watches, jewellery watches, and later, quartz watches. Stowa is quite successful nowadays, making heritage watches keeping good taste and quality level.
