Key Features

This Certina is a rare find. A co-branding project with Swiss watch manufacturer Certina and Swiss military and embroidery machine manufacturer Saurer, evident in the printed Saurer logo on the dial. This watch is more than just an unusual collaboration though. It is a very reliable automatic timepiece powered by a 28 jewel high quality Certina movement, and runs beautifully considering its 60+ years of age. The case body is solid stainless steel, and has a sturdy screw-down caseback. Below the acrylic crystal is the coarse, linen pattern silver tone dial, with applied indices and lightly lumed hands. Certina and Saurer signatures sit at the 12 and 6 positions respectively, and the watch also features a date indicator at the 3 position.

About Certina

Certina began as small watchmakers in 1888 by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth, in Grenchen, Switzerland. Having weathered the Great Depression, in the 1930’s the manufacturer adopted the brand name Certina, based on the Latin ‘certus’, meaning ‘sure’. The brand’s symbol is a turtle, symbolising robustness and longevity, and can be seen on the casebacks of most Certina watches.

Among some of the brand’s achievements are the development of the 1969 DS Concept, an early success in designing a shock resistant waterproof automatic movement, the 1970 Certina Biostar which claimed to pick up on one’s ‘biorhythms’ and could read your emotional state and vital signs, among other things, and in more recent years the company have developed sustainably produced watch straps made from recycled plastic from the ocean.

About Saurer

Founded in 1853 by Franz Saurer, the Swiss manufacturer was initially in the business of embroidery and embroidery machine development. By 1873 Saurer was the among the leaders in Swiss embroidery machinery manufacture, but the industry was fickle and sensitive to changes in fashion, trade policies and ongoing wars, so the company diversified in petrol and engine manufacture. From 1903 to towards the end of WWI, the company was one of the most valued suppliers of trucks and automobiles for use in war, and some are still in active service today.
