Key Features
Powered by a perfectly functioning German Duromat movement by Durowe, this automatic diver is a handsome piece. The cushion case is a sturdy 13.6mm thickness including the acrylic crystal, and the prominent winding crown makes it a full 38mm in width. The diving bezel is in great condition and highly legible, crosshatched stainless steel with a bakelite insert and brightly glowing lumed arrow to track diving time. A date indicator features at the 3 position of the deep blue sunburst dial which catches the light beautifully, and the same healthy glow can be found in the ‘block’ lumed indices and baton style hands.
About LIP
The company has its roots in a clockwork workshop founded in 1893 by Emmanuel Lipman and his sons, under the name Comptoir Lipmann. In 1896, the firm released the Lip Stopwatch, which later became the brand name of the company. LIP famously released the first electronic watch (‘electronic’ rather than ‘electric’ due to the presence of a diode in the mechanism) which was worn by figures such as Dwight D Eisenhower and Charles de Gualle. In the modern age, LIP has released more eccentric designs like the LIP Mach 2000, which features a left-offset case and dial with large multicoloured chronograph pushers.
The firm is associated with a huge labour movement in the 1960s, where workers successfully took control of and improved the working conditions in the factory, forming a cooperative that eventually fell apart with the company’s liquidation in 1994. Since then, businessman Jean-Claude Sensemat bought the company and modernised the watch designs, bringing it into the 21st century where it continues to produce timepieces today.
