Key features

Digi-mechs are a beloved artifact of a fascinating time in watchmaking history. With the advent of digital watches, mechanical watchmakers had to innovate and keep their place in the market. This faux-digital display was the result of this innovation, and ironically the same digital devices they were competing against have long since degraded internally, while the mechanical digi-mech with proper servicing can go on indefinitely. This Avia is a prime example, with its neat hour, minute and second wheels and sturdy steel case. The blue smokey gradient dial is a striking futuristic accent, and despite having a minor blemish from polishing this watch is in very good condition.

NOTE: It is strictly recommended that you do not move the hour discs backwards, and only move them forwards to avoid any maladjustment of the jump-hour springs.

About Avia

Avia was a Swiss watch watch company. The history of Avia watches goes back to the latter end of the 19th century. They made good mechanical lever movement watches under their own brand name and provided watches and movements for other brands including New York, The Ball Watch company and A Wittnauer.

In 1968 after becoming part of a consortium of watch manufacturers they developed the first quartz digital watch with a LCD (liquid crystal display) and revealed it to the world in 1972. This invention took the watch market by storm and meant that watches of unparalleled accuracy could be mass produced cheaply. This market lead didn’t last long as the technology was easily copied. Eventually Avia was bought out by the Fossil Group who still sell Avia watches today.
